What to Do In Case of a Dental Emergency

First and foremost, it is important that you do not panic when experiencing a dental emergency. Instead, be sure to call our office right away to discuss your immediate visit. By managing your dental emergency quickly and carefully, you could potentially save your teeth! Therefore, be sure to follow the below instructions closely to ensure you’re giving yourself the best possible chance of saving your natural teeth and preserving your oral health.

When you knock out your tooth…

If possible, the first thing you need to do when you lose your tooth is to locate it. Pick it up by the white part that is typically visible when you smile, also known as the crown. You can rinse off your tooth gently with warm water, but do not scrub it. This could damage the tissue and make it so the tooth can no longer be replaced. In order to bring the tooth to the office, you can store it in a bag of milk or saliva, but avoid using water. It is also recommended to try putting the tooth back into the gums if possible. Visit our office as quickly as possible—reinserting the tooth within the hour gives you the best possible chance of salvaging it!

When you lose a filling or crown…

The most important thing to note when you’ve lost a crown or filling is that you should not attempt to replace the device yourself, particularly with glue or any temporary adhesives. This could damage both your tooth and the device itself. Instead, try placing an ice pack on your cheek and taking over-the-counter pain medication (as instructed) to alleviate pain. Then, call our offices to schedule your visit.

If you’re experiencing dental pain…

Dental pain is not something to be ignored, as it can be caused by infection, decay, or even an abscess. The first thing you should do when experiencing pain is to swish warm water and floss your teeth. This could dislodge any food particles that might be stuck in your gums and causing pain. However, if this doesn’t work, call our office to schedule your appointment. If you notice inflammation, swelling, or damage, be sure to mention this when speaking with our office. While you wait for your visit, hold a cold compress to your cheek to help alleviate the pain.

If you have an abscess…

It can be difficult to know if you have an abscess beneath the gums. However, a small pimple on the gums accompanied by pain is a common symptom. It is important to address an abscess immediately as this serious condition can cause a number of issues, including infection. A salt water rinse may help to alleviate pain prior to your visit.
