5 Tips for Emergency Dental Care

Emergency Dentist Mt Olive

It’s very bad luck and certainly undesirable to need emergency dental care while on holiday somewhere. Yet, it can and does happen. It’s always a good idea to see a dentist before you leave and have their number on your phone. You’d be surprised how many dental issues can be resolved over the phone. Here are 5 more tips for emergency care we’re sure will come in handy.

1. Don’t Get Surgery before Traveling Abroad

Avoid major dental treatment like surgery if you plan on traveling abroad in the near future. It’s never a smart idea to start a crown or root canal right before a journey. If you’re already getting some sort of dental treatment, ask your dentist how to avoid issues later on.

2. What to Do if you Lose a Filling

You can lose fillings while on holiday. Get something to use as temporary dental filling from a local pharmacy to keep the exposed area covered. This is important to prevent contamination. Use gum or wax if you can’t find anything else or there’s no pharmacy in the area.

3. Get in Touch with your Home Country’s Embassy

If you need a dentist when you’re abroad, contact your home country’s consulate or embassy. They might be able to recommend an office. An embassy’s recommendation is reliable because they wouldn’t push a relative, friend, or business partner’s services.

4. Don’t Assume All Water is Safe

In countries like Pakistan and India, quite a few sources of water are contaminated or otherwise compromised. If you’re in a location like this, drink only bottled water and use bottled water to brush your teeth. Never brush your teeth using local water. If you get some on your toothbrush by accident, rinse it thoroughly (using bottled water, of course) or just throw it away.

5. Losing a Tooth: Don’t Panic

When it comes to dental emergencies, knocking a tooth out is right up there with the worst. You bite down too hard, chew too vigorously, or are simply enjoying a piece of your favorite steak and there it goes. What to do? First, try to find your tooth. Pick it up by the crown. This is the white part that people normally see when you open your mouth. Rinse the tooth gently without scrubbing. Use warm water. Note that scrubbing can damage the tissue and render the tooth irreplaceable.

The next step is getting the tooth to a dental clinic. Store it in some saliva or milk, but not water. We recommend trying to put the tooth back into the gums. Irrespective of the outcome, visit a dentist as quickly as possible. If you wait too long, it might be impossible to reinsert the tooth and you’ll lose it.

If only the crown falls out, clean the area out and fill it with short-term cement paste. Most pharmacies sell this. After that, bite down on the tooth gently until you’ve fixed the crown.
